Nah. This is general society attitude, shops just exploit it. Besides, folks have different goals, one likes new gear, others like internal work. What bothers me is that gear seems to come out lower quality but in a shiny wrap.

I don't know of any shops that make more money from training than by selling gear. (Especially open water shops.)
