Have you been here lately?? you have to watch where you walk with all the human waste on the sidewalk (the smell of urine is overwhelming), god forbid you get stuck with a dirty needle because they are everywhere, panhandlers harassing you while INSIDE a restaurant..... I could go on but I think you get the idea. The weather is nice though.... and I'm heading to the outside hottub after I post this but safely in the confines of my hotel.

San Francisco's gotten a lot worse over the three plus decades I've lived here. The city throws hundreds of millions of dollars every year at homelessness, and that's not counting the cleaning crews, police, and medical care. Petty crime is up. We're losing convention business. Recently I found human feces and needles in my tree planter (3 blocks from the Mission). It was just the right height for a toilet. I cut the surround down to 12" and covered it with chicken wire. Very few of the homeless are from SF, according to census and surveys. People come because of the weather, the city's tolerance, and abundance of support services. I'm fed up with it. (We have great diving nearby if you don't mind cold water).

We were there last about a year and a half ago to get married at SF city hall (which is an amazingly beautiful building and worth a visit). We didn't stay in the Mission specifically because we knew it wasn't always the best place due to those issues.

I definitely see where you're coming from. I think it's all about perspective. I grew up and lived the first half of my life in New Orleans. Like SF it's got a lot of history and beauty but is negatively affected by tourists and attracts vagrants and undesirables due to the accepting atmosphere. Growing up there it wasn't uncommon to see tourists urinating or vomiting drunk on the streets, hookers on the corners, and drug related problems. During that time it had the highest per capita murder rate in the US, about 1.8 per day. The biggest issue were the skinheads. They would roll people just for looking in their direction and it was often impossible to avoid them. I've always chalked it all up to bigger city life. So the homelessness and it's secondary issues don't really bother me as much they would many other people. At least in San Fran it's relatively safe to go most places at night.

Take away all the current issues, its an awesome city, the architecture and history are pretty amazing.... I could easily spend a month here playing tourist. But instead I get to spend 3 days a week in the Mission District, two days a week traveling to and from Nashville and 2 days at home. I only get to see the side of the city where the issues seem to be the worst.
Really cuts down on my diving which is the worst part.
