Buys light because it’s super bright.
Has turn down brightness to use it.
Makes perfect sense.
Why do cave divers buy these lights that aren’t good for cave diving?

I leave mine on high with all of my regular buddies since we are all light matched or close enough. One has a Focus 2.0 and if he has to signal through our lights he turns it to "Square" mode the it has enough lux to cut through the hotspot. If I'm diving with someone with less light than I have, I just dive in the back and it's a non-issue. If I have to dive up front for whatever reason I'll turn it down, but it's no real different than DPV matching where you put the slow scooters up front
my focus is always on square mode
how do those things work in poor visibility?
I mean, it's great for a lot of situations. If you're bringing up the rear, you can run it as bright as you want. It's not really an issue in larger rooms/passages either, especially if it's focused a bit tighter. It also works as an ok video light at full output. It's a great cave light, you just have to be aware of what your buddy is working with and adjust.
I've actually looked at the focus some. I looked when it first came out but there were some issues so I passed. I've been looking again recently, but its tough to justify more purchases.
The uwld is very nice. And the 35 watt has more punch and spot it feels than the smaller ones. It like many of the leds has its quirks. I always dive with the same person with the same light. If I was diving with more people I'd probably add a focus.

the only issue i had with the older focus was brightness. i actually waited to purchase and stuck with my hid until the 2.0 came out.
highly recommend the new focus. bright enough for anything and enough punch for dirty working dives.
i've laid thousands of feet of line with this light in sub 10' visibility. scootered in same.
I still dive a DiveRite MR11 10W HID light as I prefer the tight 6 degree beam and I'm poor. Diving with others using brighter, wider lights has been both good and bad. While I tend to lead most dives, signaling hasn't been an issue even when I'm in the rear. (Likely due to the tight beam of my light). In any case, signaling must be deliberate and forceful. I have found that super-bright lights, the UWLD that Adam Hughes uses for instance, will blind me from behind if he's too close.
