I can’t figure out why balanced p valves even exist.

I’ve never once wished I had one, but I have wished that I DIDNT have one.

Because some dude used to rant all over the internet on the virtues of balanced pee valves. Same guy also said make all your second stages finger tight and do really deep stops and then shorten your shallow stops.
