    Default Harvey's Cave - 2 lines at 20 ft

If I recall correctly, I believe I saw two permanent lines tied off to a tree limb at 20 ft in Harvey's Sink when I dove it for the first time about a month ago. It appeared one line went deep quick and the other line went under a ledge. But in the main trunk section of the cave, there was only one line. Obviously, I did not see these two beginning lines until the end of my dive, otherwise I would have followed one of them and have the answer to my question.

But here's my question. Which one is part of the main line for the system? And where does the other one go? Just to the bottom of the basin?

If I was narc'd at 20 ft on 32% nitrox, then forgive me, but I'm almost sure I saw two lines.

I could be wrong since i havent dove there before but I have been told that there is a shallow and a deep section in that cave. Hence the 2 lines.

Been a while since I've been in Harvey's what was the VIS like?

Anyway, I'm sure the sink lines have changed but the line starts tied to a log and then goes down, at about 70 ft it has a horizontal line that Ts into it. The horizontal line goes to the cave entrance, the other line simple continues to go down (not sure max depth) to the bottom of the sink, no other entrance. There are two deep areas in Harvey but both accessed from the cave itself.

Sounds like a line was added to go directly into the cave, in addition to the old one. Think it might have been there on my last dive, can not remember.

    Default We dove it...

    Hey Guys....
Caver95 and I dove it last thursday.... despite the dead rotting dear carcass that is still waiting to greet you while gearing up, the dive was excellent. We had between 20-40 of viz and went to the "pit" and back (this is the drop off to the deep section... mainline goes from 70 to 100 and then drops straight down to 240', or so I'm told... we leveled off at 105', looked below and turned), then we went back and took the first "t" near the cavern which on enterence would go to the left, I believe called the turtle tunnel by some. We went a couple thousand feet back there and had an absolutly wonderful dive. Nick leveled off several feet off the bottom while I swam 20-30 above him near the ceiling getting a great perspective of the cave (my first time). We turned our dive some ways back near a restriction that looked like a tight pair of lips that went upwards with a gravel breakdown on the floor.
As for the lines at the enterance, the two from the log go as follows... one (thin algae covered line) goes to a shallower enterence (side mount I'm told and tight and silty) and the second as mentioned above goes straight to the bottom (100' or so). If you continue down you'll find several lines that break off from the main/thicker yellow line heading to the bottom. We took the one tied off the the orange dumb bell (yes, there is a dumb bell tied off ...probably for weighting of the line... and it took us straight into the cave. It is rather disorienting since it is so dark and there is not a lot to get a visual on. We were also diving at night which threw me off a bit as well. Great dive though, we plan to go back soon (tuesday?) and I hear there are plans to lay new line in there. Great dive, I highly recommend it, if you don't mind lower viz and a bit of silty bottom. (easily disturbed).

WOW. Vis must have been great. It started raining again within a day or two of me having dove it a month or two ago and I figured it was trashed for a while. I want to get back in there ASAP then. Maybe this weekend. Dunno.

    Default we share

We would have gladly taken the deer scraps with us, but we feel that since we didn't bring it in, it would be unfair to the rest of the cave diving community to keep such a treasure to ourselves. After all... arn't we supposed to try and leave as little impact as possible at the dive sites? (we did however bag up two trash sacks of crap along side the road and hauled that out...)

Well with the talk of VIS being good I went and did Harvey's a few days ago. Vis is still good, about 15-20ft near the entrance and improves as you head down the turtle passage to about 40 at the back. But the Crystal Room was about 80 ft vis at the bottom, was very happy as last time I dove the best vis I got was 8ft.

No sign of dead animals on the surface.
