The real big question to follow up and analyze though is, how does a bottle that one filled himself as 50% end up being 80%

Also it is a good example that actually SOP of gas mixing has been broken as a tank needs to be analysed after the fill and marked with the results.

This is how I handle it at my place adding analysis result and date to such bottle. Doing so though I mostly do not analyse at dive site unless analysis had been a long time ago or a tank was not properly marked after analysis (tape ripped off, etc.)..

Same topic I do not quite understand. Why analyze before the dive for own mixes?
Analysis should happen after mixing and then properly labeled.
And with after blending I mean after the gas has settled, so might be the next morning couple of hours etc.
Of course mistakes can be made while blending..

or do you folks mean analyisng before the dive at ANY time before the dive (so maybe also soon after filling)?

I agree to a point. I label after mixing, and mark with mix, and date. If I grab a bottle that has an older date, I re-analyze it.

I fill my own at home and I analyze them during filling with an inline co and Nitrox tester. Then after they're off the whips I test them. Unless it's an odd mix other than 32, I don't mark them. I intentionally no longer mark 32% so I don't get lazy and not analyze on site. Once at the dive site I analyze pre-dive. I used to only re analyze odd mixes at the site because I was lazy and knew anything without a label was 32. I realized the stupidity of that and now analyze everything a final time pre-dive.

The last check predive is totally not necessary but I do it anyway to ensure I never get lazy. It also allows my wife to confirm her tanks too. All of the deaths have made their mark on me and now I analyze excessively.

A friend of mine died breathing a bottle filled with 100% helium back in 2001. We can only assume he thought it was 100% oxygen, he had filled it himself but it sat in the corner of his garage for months. I can only imagine that he may still be here today if he had spent 30 seconds to analyze the gas before putting a reg on it.

To my way of thinking, if you think you analyze excessively, you are analyzing just the right amount.

    That is precisely my opinion.

    Agreed.

What's even scarier, not every shop in CC monitors for CO. Even after Wayne had an issue, you'd think everybody would have wisened up. (Though this could have changed as it's been a couple months since I've had to walk into a shop, but I doubt it has)

Ok here's how I personally roll. I pump my own gas and every tank gets analyzed twice.

The first analysis happens after blending similar to how a dive shop would. A colored piece of duct tape is then applied with a FO2% and PSI only. This is considered to be an inventory label only and not suitable for diving.

Then on the day or evening before a dive the tank is retested. The colored label is removed and a white label is affixed with full FO2, MOD, PSI, Date and Initials. The tanks are then placed in my car.

If for some reason the tanks are removed from my car and placed back in the garage, the white label is removed and replaced with a colored label with only Fo2% and PSI. A retest is then required before placing the tanks back in my car.

If tanks are found sitting in the garage with a full white label it is removed and retested. A orange label is applied if not going back in my car and a white label is applied if it is.

Too anal? It seems to work for me. Been doing it this way for 18 months now.

No such thing. When it comes to breathing gas, OCD isn't a pathology, it's a virtue.
