Thread: SF2 crossover

  1. #1

    Default SF2 crossover

    CCR experience,

    Optima, Meg,
So crossed over to the SF2 in a back mount config.
    set up as follows
1 mav, on the o2 side, Golem shrimp, QC6 with plumbed in Dil, inline ADV shut off. no gauges, no quick connects.
using the 3L dil bottle for suit and wing inflation only.
my unit is far different then the stock config. may not be for all.
    (paired with 2 lp 50's)
The unit is noticeably lighter then the meg, and optima.
the internal bellow counter lung is well protected and ideal for cave diving.
the machine breathes well in trim, not as easy as a meg but well.
out of trim its a bit more difficult .
the unit is ultra streamlined the lack of an exposed counterlung is great.
house routing is going through the wing (where the scuba force model comes with the holes made into it, i opted to cut my own in a halcyon Evolve 40)
the water tolerance of the unit is great. de watering is very easy.
Shearwater controller as we all know is excellent.
Assembly is very easy more so then any other unit i have worked with.
    Disassembly is the same, simple!
the scrubber is very easy to pack and drops right in.
the breathing air on the SF2 is also noticeably warmer then the other units ive worked with.
overall im very impressed with the unit, and will now make it my new "GO TO"
    Safe diving!

I'm itching to get my SF2 up into the caves! A few more ocean dives to build up some hours and I'm off.
Still running the stock configuration here but the Bov sounds like a definite upgrade soon.
The only mods that I have done are to add a stainless steel knurled scrubber nut to replace the wingnuts

Would you care to explain what that would be about? And what the BOV has to do with it?

comment was totally aimed at great unit for caves.. should have deleted the BOV part in the quote..
Why should be obvious. In any upwards or downwards tunnel the Breathing gets bad.. up to point of not being breathable anymore at all..
Not quite something I would deem as great for caves.. or only the horizontal profile ones.. or permanently rooms big enough that one can maintain a horizontal trim..

Uh, in my experience so far that's a non issue. As cave divers we always ascend and descend in horizontal trim if we can so breathing is fine.
In the not so really common cases where you actually need to get out of trim it is still very manageable in my opinion.
If not you can always bail out for the task.

That argument against the SF2 I heard many times and I don't think it has a lot of merit. It's the same argument against sidemount rebreathers like the sidekick.

i find the unit to breathe a bit harder if youre way out of trim but not impossible. stay in trim. i de water my unit in a head up position with the way my unit is configured and it works great. what unit do you dive nitro? like nakatomi said we descend and ascend when all possible in horizontal trim. as for the BOV my reason for liking it so much is the bayonet connectors they make it easy to clean out, and inspect the mushroom valves......

overall ive yet to dive a more streamlined or simpler unit. less clutter, shearwater, solid unit= good unit

Going vertical (up or down) certainly changes breathing—probably more than on units with a different counterlung position—but “up to point of not being breathable anymore at all” isn't accurate.
