Uh, wow...
That story was told to us when I did full cave. The message the instructor conveyed is never give up. If you stop to write a message, you have given up.

Yup. Mike O'Leary told us the same story, with the same message. If he had used the time and gas he spent writing the message trying to get out, he might possibly have made it.
It seems that the message was very important to his family. He only got one chance to finish his life. Seems the love of his family was more important that the short time to scratch a message. This seemed to have brought closure to his death. Not any speculation here like most cave diving accidents. He simply screwed up and he took the responsibility for it.
