Some questions:WHAT motivates a "highly educated" and "highly qualified" foreign cave diver/instructor to break the law in México by penetrating Hoyo Negro illegally?
WHAT motivates her to come to a foreign country and sneak in under a protective fence like a felon?
WHAT motivates her to go past two signs that read NO ENTRY in both English and Spanish?
WHAT motivates her to go right by a group of INAH researchers standing by at the surface?
WHAT motivates her to keep on descending when she finds two research divers decompressing in her path that signal her to exit this Mexico/World heritage prehistoric archaeological site?
WHAT motivates her to have possibly disturbed artifacts in prior illegal entries to the site?
This "WOMEN HALL OF FAME" diver is Dr. MELANIE CLARK, originally from Canada now living in Washington State, USA.

Did they have permission to dive there, from appropriate authorities, who did not communicate the same to the "Patrimonio Cultural Sumergido de México en Tulum, Quintana Roo" or those others that are working there?
It would not be the first time the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing.

None of this surprises me in the least. I suspect that the accusations are true as there was money involved to gain access.
My understanding is the accusations are accurate. The reason for the choice to Internet shame is that this is one of multiple times that this archaeological site was dove without permission ( not necessarily by those people so don't take that as the same people have done this multiple times).
I'm also to understand that this is a true archaeological site. Not bs archaeology like the stuff going on in chan hol where amateur archaeologists are leaving markers all over the place and disturbing artifacts and damaging the cave.
Got to wonder with current political climate between US and Mexico over the "wall" and immigrants, if a US citizen trespassing on closed property may meet a surprising response. A call to a US consulate, hefty fine, and less a baggage fee due to a confiscated rebreather could be possible. We don't have details, but I would sure do my homework when the guide is taking me to a "special " site, if this under government control.

You can't assume this was a guide pushing to take someone to a special place. The blame is equal on all parties regardless of if it was a guide taking them somewhere cool or a guest specifically asking to go there. When you see the signs and the gate and you continue, you deserve to pay restitution, a fine, and a big thump on the head with a hammer.
I'm a huge proponent of Protec so it really bothers me that one of their employees was involved. On the same token my experiences with Rob have been very very different than that of the professionalism of the rest of the Protec group. I'm hoping, as I suspect, it's just one idiot employee doing something stupid. I hope that he'll be dealt with locally by his employers.

There may not BE any blame.
Mel Clark may have had permission to dive there. Just because those who are there didn't know about it, means nothing.
Just a thought.

I grew up in Central America, and it's a big deal there as well. There are two reasons for it being so serious in those countries: 1) Legitimate concerns for preservation. 2) There's a lot of money to be made in bribes surrounding these sites. I hope this all resolves smoothly for all involved because it could certainly get ugly.
