Default LDS wont sell 100% O2

I was just told by my LDS that they wont sell 100% O2 anymore. They will only sell 80%. The explanation was that training agencies are switching to 80% O2. I found a very old email from Tom Mount stating that the 80% was for training (http://atlanticwreckdivers.net/Articles/DecoGas.html ). It cited cave as a more forgiving deco environment and did not imply that the 80% O2 policy applied there.

I am going to try and explain that to the LDS owner and see if they'll change their minds on this. Otherwise I will need to buy my O2 elsewhere. Has anyone else encountered similar issues? Is there some new policy change in training agencies that I am not aware of?

Sounds like LDS O2 paranoia to me

You are actually lucky they sell it at all. Most OW shops don't sell O2, except in nitrox.

Maybe their booster broke. Easier to sell it 100% than mix it.

If you are not diving a rebreather, it probably does not make a lot of difference. Cut some tables and look, its a few minutes extra at most, and depending on the profile, you should be able to get on 80% at 30' instead of 20'.

I've only found one ow shop that would fill 100% and I think it's just because I know the owner. He just did partial pressure very very slowly. Took over an hour for 1k psi. Like Forrest said, most ow shops won't touch it nor will they do cave fills.

That's the beauty of having my own compressor and nitrox stick. Local gas supplier sells a T bottle of aviators for $40 and industrial for half that all without the dive shop drama.

Formula for 50% is 1 part O2 for every 5 parts 40%. So 500 psi of O2 and 2500 psi of 40% = 50%. Considering a T bottle is 2640 psi I can make 50% 80% of the time. Then I burn through the last 500 psi real quick and get another bottle.

Is this generally a problem in the US? I have never heard about it here in Europe.

The only dive shop I've encountered that said they don't sell 100% O2 near me was the one that should be listed as a manatee adventure shop, not a dive shop...
