Default How long did you have to wait after getting wisdom teeth extracted to dive?

I've been having some tooth pain for the last few days, so I went to the dentist this morning after work and found out my top left wisdom tooth is coming in sideways and needs to be extracted sometime soon (within the next six months, but it'll be happening within the next month or so). Dentist told me no diving for a few weeks after it's removed, but I know everyone is different with complications and healing time for that kind of thing. The timing sucks, but I want it done sooner rather than later so I don't have any more issues (it's created a pocket where stuff can get trapped and irritate my gum, which is what's happened now).

If you've had yours out, how long were you stuck on the surface?

Default Do what the Doc says

Your safe wait time depends on the size of the extraction, your health and any surgery involved.
If the dentist said wait a few weeks, you'd be foolish to go in sooner.

Only the surgeon knows the risk. Not what your friends heard, not their experiences and not even the opinion of another dentist who does not know the details.

Hell, I waited 6 months after my stroke before I got back in the water.
It ain't no big deal to wait a little while.

    Good luck

I've always followed whatever orders were given to me by a doctor when it comes to surgery, especially dental work and eye stuff (I hate having them messed with, so I'm not trying to make myself have to go back for another dose of dental horror lol). Just wondering what experiences others have had.

He told me he didn't see it being an issue and that I'd likely be back to work within a day or two, so I doubt it will be a big deal. Most people I know that have had them removed didn't have many issues, if any at all. A girl I work with recently had hers done (all four of them) and was out for almost two weeks from swelling and pain so it definitely varies from person to person.

Yes, but to be fair, the roots of the wisdom teeth extended upward all the way to your follicles.

I had wisdom teeth extracted and experienced an interesting consequence.

I was told I could rinse my mouth "very gently" for a week. About three days in, without thinking, I gave a full on swish to rinse my mouth and the salt water ended up coming out my nose. Apparently the extraction was very close to my sinuses. The pressure from rinsing my mouth was enough to rupture the remaining membrane.

I guess that's not all that uncommon (for upper wisdom teeth anyway).

It was about the same for me. Mostly because it was just before college, and I just didn't have time to go diving until I got a job after I finished school.

Probably good you waited until Émile Gagnan had finished his prototypes.

The main issue with extractions is the risk for a dry socket, which is very painful and can be a big issue if the bone gets infected...

Any negative pressure (as in using a straw) or likewise may cause a dry socket if too soon after the extraction. Better wait than sorry and in pain.

I'd recommend that you listen to your dentist and not troll the internet for advise. You never know what kind of back alley medical advise you get...

    Dive safe,

    Celia
