Lonestarfl had never dived this cave system before and had been bugging me for a couple of years to dive it, so we made a dive there today at 11:00 A.M..
The sinkhole basin was pretty clear and had almost no tannic color present, so I had hopes that the cave system would be in good shape, since it hadn't rained in the area in about 4 weeks. My hopes were dashed when we entered the first room and arrived at the starting "T". The water was noticably tannic and visibility was only 10' - 15'.
The plan was to make the complete circuit loop by going left and doing it in a counter-clockwise direction. There was no obvious flow or particulate in the water until we swam past the "T" to the deep section at about 500' penetration. The flow then picked up quite noticably and sent a lot of particulate in our direction. This slowed down our forward progress and we reached 1/3's at about the 400' line marker pointing towards the shortcut tunnel. Once we passed through the low, silty area of the shortcut tunnel and entered the larger areas, the visibility improved to 25' - 30'.
We returned to the starting "T" 43 minutes after starting the dive. We still had 1800 PSI in our doubles, but we had done what we planned to do, so we did our 8 minutes of decompression and then surfaced. The water level had gone up almost the height of one step, so it was apparent that we had made the dive during an incoming tide.
Maximum depth reached was 115'. Gas mix used was EANx 32.
