I know you have an interest in Florida schools, but given the interest in underwater cave research you ought to consider Texas A&M Galveston and Dr Tom Iliffe. He has been a real trail blazer, and you couldn't ask for better person to learn from. http://www.tamug.edu/cavebiology/AboutUs.html

The only school thats close to your requirement is USF but that school is average at best.

A better option would be to go to a better school thats within driving distance of caves: UF, Tulane, Ol Miss, Emory

The best option is to get into the most noteworthy university possible and give up two years of cave diving.

I'm planning on getting a basic business degree. In my opinion it doesn't matter where you get your degree as long as you get it and i don't plan on attending a big college to rack up student debt ( More money for dive gear ) ill probably end up choosing a small college within a decent driving distance from cave country.

Funny. Seems like you don't really know as much as you think you do. USF is actually ranked as a top 15 research schools in the nation, particularly in health.

Do you have any basis for what you're saying and have some interest in knowing about the colleges you'rerecommending, or as I suspect just talking out your ass based on minimal personal knowledge or heresay?

I didn't go to USF and have no ties to it other than knowing students and professors from the school, and having done some basic research.

You seem to have just named off some big name schools.

Where does small college=small debt and big college=big debt. Some of the tiniest colleges are some of the priciest.
And yes as a whole the name of the college isn't as important as the degree, but not as unimportant as you portray.
More importantly a basic business degree isn't going to necessarily translate to a great job.

Best opinion I've heard all day.

Look into the Turner College of Business at Columbus State University. It's over 100 miles closer than you are now. (Only 140 miles to Jackson Blue!)

When it comes to business, the name of the school and its alumni network matter more than the degree. Harvard and Princeton don't have undergrad business schools, but their students can apply and get any job on Wall Street or any F500 company.

I used a extreme example going with the Ivy League, but the same principal holds for the entire range of schools. I echo people's opinions about getting a degree and job to finance diving....I'm in my mid to late 20s and routinely the youngest guy in the water.

    This.

I met of bunch of his students in cave country and they were good divers and had it all together in terms of priorities.
Plus, he is respected in the research world and is not a prima donna.
He would likely push you to add biology/geology credentials to your business plans.

TAMUG is a great school if you're interested in a marine science, marine engineering, or a maritime degree but they don't really have a business school. Dr. iliffe teaches a scientific diving class and brings his students to Florida every year for them to get cavern certified and attend the NSS-CDS conference. (UM-RSMAS also offers a scientific diving class, not sure about UF). He also takes students to the Yucatan for a Tropical Biology class and others to TAG. These are like once a year trips, so you're not likely to see them in cave country very often. However, I've met several of his former students in Florida and a couple of them have pursued advanced degrees at USF with Dr. Jim Garey where they've studied cave fauna in the Tampa Bay area.

Sludge is right on given what you say and in Georgia you would not have to pay out of state tuition as you would in Florida (unless you can establish Florida residency or get a scholarship to waive). Once you get your undergrad degree you could always get an MBA from a more prestigious school. As for a major in a business school (look for AACSB accreditation) economics can be good (see the list JAX linked) as can logistics/supply chain, and accounting is always in demand if you can stand the tedium. Actually accounting faculty spots are plentiful and at some schools brand new PhDs are getting over $200k fgr a 9 month contract. Check out the BLS Occupational Handbook for business school jobs...http://www.bls.gov/ooh/

If you can get into a Florida school without out of state tuition both UNF in Jacksonville and UWF in Pensacola offer AACSB accredited business programs and are not that far from cave country. UWF (where I am located) is a nice school and JB is a 2 hour ride down I10. Tallahassee is only another hour or so but it it is a haul to high springs. From UNF in Jacksonville it is not far to the Peacock and Ginnie area.

Let me know if you have an interest in the University of West Florida. Bill Huth
