A while ago during a visit to Little River, I turned down 101st road and then headed East on another dirt road towards HWY 129. On the North side of that dirt road were huge piles of Lime Rock and sand and they formed a wall that was at least 30 feet high along the length of this road. I asked about it in general conversation at Cave Excursions East and was told that it was a Lime Rock Quarry and that the do a certain amount of blasting. Some of us surmised that at some point in time this would probably damage the groundwater in this area and maybe even effect the Little River Cave.
I'm sure it's a legal business but I was curious if they got the same uproarious protests as the Super Walmart is getting.
It would seem to me that a 100 acre Lime Rock Quarry blasting with T.N.T. and digging deep into the Earth less than a mile from a beautiful underwater cave like Little River should have raised some concern.
Now I'm no Engineer, Hydrogeologist, or Genius but doesn't a mining operation have a MUCH greater impact to Caves and groundwater than a large retail store?
I may be poking a Hornet's nest but maybe this really is just mostly about "Hating Walmart". Ah, Yes.......selective outrage, It's the American way.
B.T.W. I don't really know if this is a Quarry but that's what some of your locals told me. Maybe it's really just some loony farmer with a Backhoe building the "Great Wall of O'brien"![]()
