During the week of July 15th – July 23rd 2016, a group of cavers gathered in Tony Grove Campground near Logan, UT with the aim of pushing the bottom sump in Main Drain Cave. Local Utah cavers reached out to Jean Krejca from Austin, TX in order to see about putting together a team to crack the main sump at the very bottom of the cave. Over a year in the making with much logistical planning and preparing, the project has come to a successful end. With the support of 20+ cavers from Texas, Colorado, Utah, California, Arizona and New Mexico, dive gear for Jean (Creature) Krejca and David Moore was hauled to the sump over 4 days. On July 22nd, Jean and David pushed into and beyond the sump and into virgin territory. The sump was 370’ long with a max depth of 79’. The dry passage beyond was surveyed at approximately 500’ and ended in a second sump. Attached is a 5 min clip of the sump and beginning of the dry passage beyond it, along with a link to photos taken by caver Justen Despain of the sump.
Much thanks to our amazingly strong haulers for making this possible and thanks to all who helped with the complex logistical support that was needed for this project. Lastly, thank you to Stone Aerospace and the USDCT for providing us with advice, support and gear for this project. Without all of you we couldn’t have succeeded.
