Default What did it feel like laying line for the first time?

This forum has a broad level of experience, from new cave divers to experienced cave divers. There are vacation cave divers and regulars. Explorers and line followers.

*** What I want to know is what it felt like laying line in virgin cave ***

I'm a vacation cave diver and love the experience I get when "re-exploring" but I often think about what it would feel like to be the first into an area. I've even contemplated actually knotting line just in case.

For those who have knotted line sitting on a reel for that just in case moment, feel free to share your daydreams as well.

Thanks for sharing your story or even your dream of laying line.

    Garth

For me, laying line for the first time was a lot like having sex the first time. It was unexpected, very awkward, I couldn't see ####, I got stuck, and thought it lasted way longer than it actually did.

Garth, you are welcome to knot line for me anytime. I'll even supply the reel.

It's one of the best highs ever, I was amped up for about 3 days after.

I read a book awhile back called "Ultimate High: My Everest Odyssey" which describes the feeling mountain climbers get when summiting. What he described in that book is about the feeling I had about laying line in virgin cave.

Surprise and shock that there wasn't a line in there already.

Mine was more like surprise and shock when I looked up and saw a line on the ceiling in my virgin passage. :-(

Done that a few times. My favorite is being asked to look at a sink hole, and getting below the algal bloom to find mud flats. Since half the land owner family turned out, you swim around for awhile in circles to give them a show.

Nope, different location but still in Ginnie. This one was off of the double domes line. I was sure I found something new until............. I looked up.

I personally got into cave diving so that I could explore new caves once the time came. I have only laid about 1200ft personally of line, but I can say its everything I had imagined it would be. As Derek said, I could imagine it being similar to the feeling of summitting a huge mountain. Being somewhere and seeing it for the first time is truly remarkable. Being able to help on some projects where others were laying line and seeing them come out with empty reels and tons of data is also remarkable. I think it takes a special kind of diver to explore new caves, especially ones that aren't crystal clear and easily accessed. If you ever get the chance to do some exploring, do it!
