i agree with all that admit to solo diving here...bill rennaker has a great write up on the subject also that i agree with...i greatly enjoy the aspect and comraderie of diving with others that are more skilled than me and in passages i have never ventured...but there is a true peacefulness and calm that can only come by soloing...
In a cave, I'd prefer buddy diving at this point even if I was not limited to it by certification. Once I'm full cave, I'll probably do a few solo dives here and there if I really want to go and can't find a buddy. Right now, it's something I'm just not 100% comfortable with (too new), regardless of what my card says. I know I'm responsible for saving myself either way should an emergency happen, but there is a slight comfort factor coming with having another diver or two in close proximity.
Almost all (99%) of my open water dives prior to pursuing cave training were solo because I got certified by myself and the guy I was going to buddy up with from my OW class was never available after the class ended - so I just went by myself. I spent lots of time burning through tanks of gas in the pool and various rivers/springs before I ever found buddies to dive with.
