    Default question about tanks

Hello all. I am looking for a couple tanks. Can someone tell me the difference between the white and grey fabers. Is one better than the other. Looking for a set of LP85's for sidemount. Will be my first steel tank purchase

I'm not sure, and would love to be corrected if I'm wrong, but I believe the grey and white tanks are both made by the same company but distributed by two different groups. I believe the grey tanks are OMS and the White tanks are Blue Steel, both manufactured by Faber. In terms of physical characteristics, I think the tanks are the same in every way but color. I think some of the names are different but the tanks are the same (like Blue Steel 121s are the same as OMS 125s).

I hope the bump helps, and someone comes along to correct me if I'm wrong.

More or less true. Slightly different paint composition. As far as diving, should be within a hair of identical. The OMS paint is tougher, but chips off with age/abuse. The Blue Steel scratches more easily. Consider them the same and buy whatever you come across in decent condition.

From my experience the tanks are the same and most of the OMS tanks are grey but I do have a set of Faber 121's that I use most of the time and they are factory gray with Faber stickers on them. No where on them are they labeled OMS like my other OMS tanks. You might want to look at some Worthington 85's as the Faber 85's get floaty especially if you are diving mix. If you can find them the old true HP 100 Genesis / PST tanks dive really sweet for sidemount. A few cubic feet less of gas but they are nice tanks.

I believe the information you gave is pretty much correct. And remember, they also used to make cylinders for Scubapro, until about 2002.

If you are asking about the new tanks, Faber is currently selling their tanks in an anniversary silver/grey color instead of white.

I have one grey & one white 85. I see nothing different between them.

One is a Fabor and the other is either a Pressed Steel or a Worthington. The grey one is more negative. How many dives do you have? When your tanks are lower in pressure the white tank is lighter than the grey tank.

Well there's a hot-dip galvanized silver that's not painted on, and those are the Worthington and PST tanks. Faber has made tanks for a few companies (Blue Steel, OMS, Scubapro) and they're all painted. They're also less negative than the Worthy/PST tanks. The Faber tanks are painted either white or silver/grey. I'm fairly certain some of the OMS steels were originally yellow (like lp45s).
