Interesting. So the loop of a rebreather provides enough airspace to allow the sound waves to propagate like the shoe. I've dove with plenty rebreather divers but have never talked to any while there.

I have heard guys talking in rebreathers, but none as clearly as in the movie. I suspect that dialog in the movie was a re-creation.
Not hard to duplicate in a re-creation. I heard a talk on this recovery at Eurotek a couple years ago. At least one of the victims was stuck hard in a restriction. The re-creation showed the guy lying in a fairly roomy passage. While I suspect the movie contained some of the footage from the actual recovery, I am also pretty sure that most of it was only a re-creation.
The hardest part about talking on the loop is not having use of your lips. I would imagine certain languages translate better to that type of speaking.
I've never dove a rebreather, but I can say that I've dove with Jon Bernot and he was able to give me some pretty clear instructions through his loop while under water. It sounded about like it did in that movie. I don't think it's an easy thing to do, or he would have done it more often, but it worked when he did it. It kind of shocked me, I was like... what? how is he talking to me!?
