    Default Cozumel Cave Diving Resources

I am going to Cozumel in April for a couple of days and want to do an afternoon of cave diving or evening of cave diving. Can someone point me in the redirection for resources for caves on the island? Or maybe PM an outfit to go with?

Forum rules prevent us from recomending an operation, but individuals can send you a PM.

Coz was hit hard by the hurricane, so I am not sure what is still open. There are a couple of nice cavediving sites though.

Rule #6 is best circumvented by posting on another board so we may all benefit from the knowledge.

Of course, rule #7 probably says don't discuss rule #6.

    As the rule stands-
"No personal opinions or endorsements (negative or positive) about other individuals, cave diving related businesses and organizations. "

    I ask the moderators-
Are we starting to provide strict interpretation of these rules or is the developing and maturing system that is called into play when members step out of line or provide statements that are over the top and invasive to other members?

Otherwise if we can’t openly provide options (web sites for others to research) to our members we will be repeating ourselves very often.

This is not a vilification of the moderators but I for one, would rather would have a clear line in the sand.

However, the statement of “no personal endorsements” is very interesting since very few members could speak directly for any specific cave agency. Hence all posts are personal opinions or endorsements by simpling posting a statement.

One of the most discussed topic of all times (on this site at least), is about our few rules, and specifically Rule #6.

The history of Rule #6 came about when this site was created. It was soon discovered that you can not have a civil discussion that included opinions about other cave divers and cave diving organizations. It was (and still is, I think) more important to keep this site CIVIL, so we still have a Rule #6.

Sure, it would be nice if we allowed only favorable opinions about others... but that isn't fair to those that have a totally opposite opinion to yours.

There is also the issue of posting incorrect information about someone or some organization that hurts their reputation and/or business.

Rule #6 also helps to keep this forum free from indirect soliciting from (and for) instructors, organizations and businesses.

Personally, I do not like this rule, but... I prefer it to the extreme moderating it would take to keep topics civil. We have learned that lesson over the years... over and over and over again. It would be great if one day we can figure out how to change/drop that rule and not have all the problems it prevents. Any ideas/suggestions?

We have tried new things to improve this site, like the chat, but it didn't work out. We keep adding subforums... that has proven useful on occasion. These changes don't exactly relate much to rule #6, but they show we can change and adapt...

BTW... We did save and incorporate the cave diving & technical related shops page from the old Overhead Times site into the Resources pages (link above), so you could have referred to that...

I liked the idea of being able to offer positive comments, but you are right in that would not be fair to someone who disagrees with what was said and would present a biassed view of things. The whole point of offering opinions is to be able to draw from both the good and bad so you can make a reasonable decision. You could try doing away with rule #6 with the warning that if a thread becomes a flame war it will be closed down immediately (clear majority consensus of all moderators) with no debate; that is likely to cause some ill will but as long as it is made known up front I think it would be fair. If too many threads have to be closed that could be seen as a clear indication that we are not mature enough and therefore require rule #6 to keep us in line. There are other sites that we can go to if we really want to argue a point; it is nice to have some place to go where we can read about topics without the ensuing flame wars. CDF has remained my favorite site due to the civil atmosphere it offers and I do not want to see that part of it change.
