Why not sell some of the west back to the people?

Regardless of my opinion on federal government holding *any* land within the borders of a state, the federal land ownership in the west is excessive. A quick eyeball of the numbers looks like an order of magnitude higher than everyone else. Give it back to the states, and let the people decide.

Have you been to any of those states? For the most part the federal land is very dry, and not much use for farming, living on, etc.

I grew up in Washington. Some of the best land in the state is federal (my personal opinion). Regardless, why not let the state hold it if no one wants it?
