Default What is the scientific explanation for the rumble noise inside Devil's Cave system?

Doing the Intro to Cave Diver Course last year at Devil's Eye, I heard this rumble noise that I though were produced by other divers passing us using scooters. Later, the noise came back again and no divers around; then, I though the cave was collapsing at some point.

After having more than +500 minutes diving this system, I'm getting used to it; but, I would like to find a scientific explanation for the noise. The only information I have is that it is created by the water flowing and changing pressure.

Has anybody can provide some more information or a place (internet), book, etc where to learn more about it? Does each submerge cave have unique sounds? Can you hear the noise deep inside this cave, from where it is coming?

    Thanks in advanced!

I used to hear it as well...then I started clearing my ears and it goes away every time....it is a pressure thing in your ears or so I think...I am certainly no expert and just sayin what works for me. Bill

Is it not the air on the ceiling? I remember Edd telling me years ago (maybe '09 / 10 time frame) about someone doing a study on this. They had placed some recorders in some of the Mill Pond caves. He told me who it was but I don't remember. He might though and the study would be interesting to see. I think the person had even got grant money to do this research.

I've heard that, mostly near the bone room line jump, and I told myself after listening closely that it was actually the sound of the water moving through the cave.
I was in Little River a couple weeks ago and distinctly heard (two different times) a boat engine speeding up some 90 feet above me. Hadn't heard that before.

    L.O.L.

I stop hearing the noise some time ago; but, last weekend, I did my first solo dive and the noise came back. This time, I decided to find out what it is going on here.

I'm not a scientist, but I'm pretty sure it is the bubbles rolling along the ceiling. I used to hear it all of the time on open circuit and thought it was the water moving. Now that I'm on a CCR, I don't hear it anymore unless there are open circuit divers around.

I've heard this same explaination from more than one source.

It's bad luck to be superstitious.

Bubbles on the ceiling definitely make noise. So do powered boats in the river.
