I keep reading about SM divers putting their canister on their right side, the same as Backmount, being new to canister torches (still waiting for my first to arrive!) I can't figure out how that's meant? I know and am happy with the location for BM, but if i put a canister in that position and clip on a steel SM cylinder, surely it's going to be in the way?

I dive an Xdeep Stealth, and my "hip" D rings are almost all the way back, next to the square D rings that are used for the butt pouch, spools etc. So i'd have no room to waist belt mount "behind" my hip D ring, and if "In Front" of the D ring, surely when the heavy steel cylinder "hangs" on the D ring in the water, it'd be practically right on top of the cannister?

Apologies if i'm way off here.... but does anybody have any pictures of this mounting, and especially useful if there is a cylinder attached too?

My other options are the standard "across the butt strap" mounting, or possibly down the spine next to the weight pouches, underneath the wing, which would presumably protect it too?

    Thanks..

With only the steel cylinders, it may even work mounted on the waist. I had it like that for a while. It begins to be more of problem when you start using stages on your right side, especially for me if I top mount them the Rob Neto way, which is designed to push the main tanks down a little.

Why not attach it like this? Either to the buttplate or to the square brackets on the back of the Stealth. You will need a light cord of approx. 51" though.

This is what i keep reading, but i don't understand how/where the cannister will sit in relation to the SM cylinder, hence a request for pictures. I currently only tend to use a single deco cylinder, which is mounted on the left, and under my SM cylinder.

I don't use the butt plate, I bought one, tried it and found i didn't like it, so removed and went back to Hip D rings. The cannister light i'm buying comes with a standard length 44" light cable i believe, so butt mounting may not be an option.

If you use a seperate belt buckle to hold the canister light in place you can adjust it in the water so it sits just under your main tank.

I tried the back mounting of the canister light that is popular with the SMS100 / 75 crowd in North Florida and after trying the butt mount method I liked it much better. It is amazing how much the canister was hanging up. I never really realized it because that is the way I was taught but after trying a different method I am a convert.

It will need to sit a little more in the front and not as much on the side as in DIR backmount. Basically you want to slide it as much as possible towards your front, without the canister blocking your hip from flexing.

    I do the same.

I have added this to mine so that I can remove the canister if I find the need to do so while underwater...

I may have to try one of those.

I put mine on the waist belt, before the sidemount tanks. I leave the extra buckle loose, so I can adjust the position. Then I put on the sidemount tanks. After that, I push the canister over to the right tank, and lock the buckle. The canister ends up just above the tank in the "V" space between the tank, and my body.

Excuse my stupidity, but just to clarify.... Put the cannister on the waist belt "loose" and around to the front a little, then once in water, horizontal and settled, slide the cannister along the waist belt toward to the right cylinder and once as far as it'll go, clamp the extra buckle closed, locking it in position. Does this sound correct?

If so, does this need to be reversed, ie, buckle released, cannister moved back toward the front, before exit? Or does it just stay where it is for the exit?
