It is a shell suit. It has a thin membrane shell, and a thin protective layer to protect the membrane. The outer layer doesn't hold any air, so it is about the same as any shell suit.

Tony, it's kind of unique in the fact that the inner shell is somewhat over sized, the outer cover is stretchy and will compress the inner shell and any undergarments down to a streamlined shape. It's kind of like Diving a wetsuit but dry and very flexible. Most people find they can be a pita sometimes while donning, other than that they are excellent and seriously though suits.

+1 on the donning ... until I learned a pretty good way to do it. Still not as easy as a telescoping waist, but they swim very nicely. The outer shell is also easily replaceable. Happy w/ mine.
