    Default Cypress Spring

Does anybody know how I can get water conditions for Cypress Spring? Lynn and I have kayaked up Holmes Creek to the spring many times. But the first time we took my mother there (she had seen our photos) the spring run looked like a muddy Georgia river.

Lori from Ohio is visiting us tomorrow and that was where we intended to kayak, but I don't want a replay of our last trip.

It rained like the devil yesterday in south Georgia and I'm afraid Cypress is going to be blown out tomorrow. Does anyone know river levels or something? Maybe the name of a canoe business that I could call?

Old Cypress Canoe Rentals in Vernon.

Looks like Holmes Creek blew up a few days ago. However, wells in the area were showing record level high readings during February/March so you might be alright. Everything's been such a crap shoot lately: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?site_no=02366000

Cypress is usually the last to blow. They have some erosion control that keeps too much mud from getting into the basin, but it can't stop the river from flooding.

It's rained heavily since last weekend here in South Alabama, and in the Panhandle. My understanding is that Biblical Flood II is on the way, and most of the Gulf Coast is under a flash flood watch from now until Sunday.

You may also check with Holmes Creek Livery. Let me know. I'm ready for a return trip to Cypress soon.

I use this river gauge for some caves on Holmes Creek as well as Ebro on the Choctawatchee River. The Holmes Creek caves are usually better the lower the gauge is. Generally under 9' or so. Now Ebro is the exact opposite. The higher the gauge the better the viz is in Ebro. I usually won't go to it at less than 11'. I have been when it was close to 15' and the viz in the cave was awesome at least on the way in. Anyway probably about 1 1/2 years ago the water level was about what it is now and I took some buddies to Ebro who had never been. They couldn't get in on as I think the flow overwhelmed them on their first try. We left there and went to Cypress. The basin was blown. It was so bad I tied a line off to the sign that was just barely sticking out of the water so they could at least follow me. So with a sample size of 1 I would say the basin is shot at 12'+. I would call the canoe / kayak rental places as suggested but you might check this gauge and make a few trips and figure out about when it goes.

For some reason, I recall hearing Livery recently closed down. I may be mistaken on that though.
