Negativity in Cave Diving Politics

Valve drills appear to be a requirement. NACD Standards, intro to cave, Page 19, Section 8, Item M - g.

g. Air/ gas valve management. Diver practices turning own valves on/ off, simulate various regulator/ valve failures. (May be done in open water at start or end of dive)

my only issue with standards is, who really follows them?? jumping to ow instruction for a sec, what ow agency lets you teach in an overhead environment??
so why is everyone and their brother teaching deep classes at blue grotto??

If everyone can teach deep classes in an overhead, why can't a cave instructor for go a valve drill?

He can reach his valves, of course he has evolved to sidemount as well. The modern insult should be along the lines of "you probably use those lazy ring loops because getting the bungee over your valves is too hard".

Now, his comment was about standards and why not for go shut offs...that is ignorant and reflects the dumbing down of the sport. I wish him luck and yet kinda hope he craps in his shorts when he cant reach his valves when he needs to reach them. Then, maybe, he will understand.

We all have stories, but I accidentally donated an air break reg to a diver that had a roll off. If I had not been there he would have had a very bad day. But maybe he should have....might have taught him something. Or removed him from the sport, either way not a bad outcome.

As for me, I'm glad I can reach all my valves in any configuration without the aid of a second party.

I agree with Bob, being able to control the valves is essential and there should be no excuses.
If someone cannot handle their shutdowns in time, sidemount and/or practice is likely to solve the problem and the way to go.

He has a point regarding Blue Grotto as an overhead environment, I have been there once for a demo say and all the divers reported it as "starting out nice but once people got in the visibility was about a foot, so and so hit their head, got lost a few minutes, etc" So, based on that I said "I'll never teach here" and I haven't nor shall I.

By the way... does everybody spell forgo as two words in the south?
