My guess it would be the State's lawyers who have never been in a cave "re-interpreting" a rule or policy hiding behind the guise of "liability and guest safety".

So now would it be "Thanks lawyers!"?

Is it possible that the local park manager that has management control over Lafayette Blue, Troy Springs, and Peacock has simply decided to make swimming and diving decisions without the assistance of an outside alliance in a manner similar to other Florida st parks?

I am in the camp that this was a safety / liability issue. If the divers are paid then I would assume the activity would then have to follow OSHA guidelines. Just guessing but my father was a lawyer in Alabama and I would assume that Florida would limit their liability in several ways just as Alabama and most other states do. This to me sounds like lawyers run a muck. Anyway I know a lot of people don't believe in it now days but personal responsibility needs to play a more prominent part in our lives and we need a lot less government. As long as they don't close it to diving I don't see a big issue. I basically agree with the GUE boys on this one.

Accidents will lead to closures. The best way to keep a site open is to keep it accident-free. By not allowing line work is known cave-diving sites they are trading one liability for another.

The primary function of the line committee was line repair and replacement as needed, and providing information to park staff post-flooding events to help with their determination, as needed ,for opening. The NFSA will be happy to communicate changing conditions and or opening/closing of the park as we know it,but future line maintenance will be something that the community will have to determine. Thank you needs to be extended to people who have sacrificed their time to help provide these functions at the park. The NFSA board has a meeting scheduled this Saturday at the OG pavilion at 1:00pm, we would like to hear your suggestions, and ideas. Thank you.
It is my understanding that there are openings to be a volunteer for the parks BUT you have to meet the same requirements as the state employees who dive. As an example, you'd have to meet the physical/medical requirements/tests each year at your own expense. I know Jeff and I had the discussion but it's been over a year so I don't know what other formalities were involved.

Peacock is closed. The decision to reopen is based on input from volunteer divers. Volunteer divers are no longer allowed. Peacock will never reopen. QED.

Seems to me that would be a fine solution. No group in charge, personal safety and accountability.
