Every time mankind has tried to solve one problem by introduce a non-indigenous species, there have been big problems.

Think of such things as Kudzu, brought in to control erosion. In Australia, they brought in English plants which ran wild. Then they brought in rabbits to control the plants. The rabbits ate other plants. Then they brought in wolves to control the rabbits

Is this meant to be a joke? If not, I find it very disrespectful.

If the catfish in Hole bother you, I suggest you dive in a sterile environment like your local swimming pool :-(

Yes, it is. There is an off-line conversation with John that goes along with it.

However, if you find this so "very disrespectful" please drop me a PM as I'd like to understand further in dialogue.

    Cheers

It's very easy to explain. The catfish live there, you and I don't. We are visitors and should respect the environement, whether we like all aspects of it or not.

As to the spearing being a joke or not, I'd have to trust your word on that. Sadly the grass carp (the one that was featured on the T-Shirt two or three years ago) was speared, as I was told at the shop.
Now the carp wasn't a native species in the cave, so I didn't form or voice any opinion on that. But talking about spearing the catfish in hole is not funny, at least not to me, at least not considering the story of the carp.

It's a non-issue. People have joked about shooting the catfish for a long time, no law against it, but they're part of the ecosystem, so no one is going to mess with them.

Killing the carp though, is a good thing. When they ER big enough that they stop eating the grass and start eating the fish, they're hurting the ecosystem more than helping it. That said, they obviously aren't making much of a positive impact, so I'd be bummed to learn they were adding more.

Ok, now (even I) get it - it was a joke
Well, obviously being German, I was born without a sense of humor, LOL

Lynn and I kayaked from the park down to Edd's and back this Fall. I couldn't believe how much different it looked than the last time I did it, about ten years ago. I would guess there is now twenty times as much grass and hydrilla and other stuff.
