I suspect I left out something. While ads with scantily clad girls may get the attention of young males, the intended audience probably doesn't even notice there is scuba gear on the models

I don't think that's correct, Forrest. Agnes wanted above all to be the best; if anything she wanted to be Jill. Male or Female was not a factor. How many male deaths have been due to the same thing - trying to prove they are better than all others regardless of any other characteristic? Many. We are a population of testosterone driven humans, the males among us and the females too. It's not whether one gender is better or worse or even different, it's that we all think we are or can be better; better than others, better than our past selves. I think cave divers are unique in that, not exclusively unique, astronauts and dare-devils are included.

Look at the industry as a whole. How many female cave instructors are out there? I am not picking on anyone in particular. I just have access to numbers from these agencies.

NACD, no female instructors. 0 out of 41 listed

    http://www.nacdmembers.com/main/training/instructors/

    NSS-CDS, 5 out of 51 listed

    http://www.nsscds.org/instructorlist

GUE, Maybe 5 plus or minus, out of 138...its hard to tell by the name, so dont hold me to that.

I think a good question to ask is, what barriers women face in becoming instructors? What percentage of cave divers are women?

And at our house, 0%. So I think we can safely interpolate that out to 25%.

I don't think the barriers I faced were any different than the barriers faced by my male counterparts. I always felt like I was treated fairly even though the process itself was one of the hardest I've ever been through. I'm a firm believer that it damn well should be!

I am surprised to see how few female instructors there really are. My cavern instructor and my apprentice instructor were women. The female instructors may be more active.
