Something LIKE DiveBoard that would give the end user a bit more control, like filtering cave only dives on a report would be great...

You didn't mention if you are looking for online only but that is a very basic feature of DivingLog. I haven't used the mobile app so that I am not sure about.

Another option is Subsurface, which is available for Windows, Mac and Linux and supports a server based synchronisation too.
There is an Android client, not sure about the iphone,.

Awesome! Some great software comes from passionate programmers that want to fix something that bothers them. The best software then grows from great software when you can get it aopted and turn it into a project that people can contribute to. I'd suggest looking at some of the projects that are already in the works and see if you can make them better. Nakatomi mentioned SubSurface, I think they're on the right track with what they have and besides loving open source myself the thing I love the best about this project is they're making it so that it can talk to everything possible and not locking your data in a proprietary format.

Maybe you can build the Android/iOS app for it, or maybe you can build the Redmine equivalent that allows users to host a Subsurface server on their own server or host it on a virtual host?

There's lots of things you could accomplish with a passion for diving and software. I'd only encourage you to get involved with a project that would build onto something.

Best of luck and hope to see great things from your project!

PS What kind of programming do you do?

+1 for subsurface. It's open source, and multi-platform. It could be that you could pool your skills in support of an established project and help the wheel roll better/faster/etc.
The project was started by Linus and includes some pretty notable developers I think, so be on your merit

Thanks for the replies everyone. As for what I do, Im an airline pilot full time but I also own part of a digital marketing firm, specializing in online things. I do php, javascript, html, css programming primarily. Ive also started dabbling in ios apps.

When I started this thread I was thinking of starting from scratch however after looking into subsurface I realize that there is a lot of great stuff there and a dedicated group of people that are doing it for nothing other than passion. Ive reached out to them, I really think taking their downloadable app and making it sync with an online version could give the ultimate logbook. Hopefully we can come up with something!

That's awesome. I like the desktop version and would love to sync it with my Android phones, but sadly it only syncs into their database right now.
And frankly I don't want my dive logs to be public, especially the night dives, LOL (just kidding...).

Just a thought, set up a gmail account and use their FORM app to build your own dive log. The Form app will allow you to custom build a log and get a public URL for the data entry allowing you to use it sorta like an app (add the url to your bookmarks) and capture the input data on a gmail spreadsheet allowing you save elsewhere, do analytics, etc. By having the URL, you can use it from any web capable phone as well as your computer. It also resolves the hosting concern since it's up on google (assuming you trust them) also don't need to sync since it's live. Well...it's what I've been playing with lately and seems to work pretty well. Oh yeah...and it's free. Only need to spend time to create it (which is pretty simple).
