Default Diving Insurance - local diving coverage

DAN will cover a diving accident as close as your bathtub but will not pay evacuation costs until the accident occurs at least 50 miles away from home.

DiveAssure won't cover anything until the accident is at least 10 miles away from home, but at that point it will cover evacuation and medical.

Did I get that wrong? Anybody figure out how to get coverage closer to home? Seems to me this is an actuary's game. People who live closer being more likely to dive more, so higher chances for a claim. Let's not cover them in those cases.

I think the DAN argument is that if you are within 50 miles of home you probably drove so you can have your buddy drive you to the local hospital, no need to pay for evacuation if you have transportation....

My favorite dive site is three miles from my house, but my buddy bottle can't drive a car...

I use diveassure. All of my dive sites are more then 10 miles away. DiveAssure has one wierd hiccup. If you aren't in the water they don't cover you. That means that an accident that occurs while getting dressed on the beach isn't covered(lets say you drop a tank on your foot and break it), but if you are swimming on the surface, you are covered.

Sludge, in your situation, what do you do given that neither insurance carrier will cover you? Is there another dive insurance option?

We're just talking about transportation to the medical facility, right? I feel sure somebody at the park would get me there, plus most of the time my wife is collecting shells on the beach.

it is just transport to the chamber. I don't think even the solo cave divers are ever too far from another person willing to get them to the hospital....

I really do not know what fees will apply when I use Tricare during a situation? Anyone here ever had a situation that required evac. that is on Tricare?

Now that completely depends on where you are. Where I did most of my solo diving there's no hope of help or even company beyond mosquitoes and curly tailed lizards.

I think evacuation insurance is to get you home, or a hospital near your home from the hospital you were taken toorginaally, not to the hospital. If you are 50 miles from home are are at your nearest hospital normally

Never one to pass up a business opportunity, allow me to introduce the new "Honest John's Dive Insurance". It is being launched to fill the gap between 0-50 miles of transportation from a domestic dive site. It is approved by PADI (Put Another Dollar In), NACD (Not Accepting Canadian Dollars), CDS( Current Dollar Shortage), and DAN (Donate Another Nickel). The fee is only $35.00 per year, and it will link you to short range transportation, almost anywhere in the US via our silent and unknowing partner's website:
