Anyone care to speculate as to the reason(s)? Could it be that everyone's being more careful? Is it because we're all getting older, and with age comes wisdom? Or could it be because certain cave divers have taken up the cause of keeping newbies from offing themselves? I wonder.....
It's probably for the same reasons that people believe that Roe v. Wade legalizing abortion caused a dip in crime rates many years later. Both the crime dip claims and dip in cave diving fatalities have too many variables for any scientific rigor too make anything but wild-ass speculation. Correlation is causation and all that stuff. I think the crime rate also correlates to eliminating lead from gasoline too, but I digress.
Are instructors generally doing a good job making sure students are well-prepared for caves? Based on the instructors I know, I believe they are but instructors can't do everything. Nothing but fear of ridicule and surviving keeps me from personally bending the cave diving rules.
End result, 2014 could possibly be part of a trend of our sport becoming safer, but trying to apply meaning to a single year where no incidents occurred is silly in my opinion.
