TISHOMINGO COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- Friday morning, people from the eastern part of Tishomingo County held a meeting to discuss issues they have with their water bills.
County Supervisor Brandon Grissom said some people want to see changes made to their water provider, the Tishomingo County Water District.
"There's numerous problems within the system, one being that the system is old," Grissom said. "The water lines are in desperate need of being replaced."
He said customers have seen water bill increases for more than six months now due to leaks in the water system.
"The rates are high," Grissom said. "Another complaint that I hear is that they have no voice within that system."
WTVA spoke with the Tishomingo County Water District Board Chairman Donnie Cain over the phone Friday afternoon.
According to him, the increase in water rates was caused by the city of Iuka, which doubled the amount it charges the water district for using its water back in April.
Cain admits there are leaks in the district's system, but said engineers are working to locate them and that the district repairs them as they have the money available to do so.
Supervisor Grissom said citizens in the eastern part of the county will continue to voice their concerns to the water district.
"I'd like to see them be able to afford their water bill and live and have a good life," Grissom said. "I want what's best for our citizens."
Representatives from that area plan to go to the water district's next meeting.
The next Tishomingo County Water District meeting will be held Tuesday evening.
