Some contributed to art, others to medicine or community service or other fields, but all the winners at The Gainesville Sun's Spirit of Gainesville Award ceremony embodied the character of the local community in some fashion.

Spirit of Gainesville Awards
Monday night was the fourth year The Gainesville Sun and Gainesville Magazine hosted the awards, which recognized individuals in six categories who have had a positive impact in Gainesville.

The categories were art, education, medicine, community service, entrepreneurship and youth.

For Carole Dunne, the ceremony offered her more than just the chance to support her daughter, community service nominee Trisha Ingle, for her work in the local labor movement. It was also a chance to learn about the work others were doing in the community.

After she spoke with someone involved in the issue of springs conservation, Dunne said she felt energized.

“I am definitely going to get involved with the springs issue,” she said.

At 6:30 p.m., Gainesville Sun Executive Editor Douglas Ray began the proceedings in the atrium of The Sun's offices.

“I found it deeply inspiring as I read through the nominations,” Ray said. “This evening is for all of you, our nominees, our nominators, your friends and family.”

Many of the nominees were present and were honored with certificates and praised for their work in the community.

Jacki Levine, editor of Gainesville Magazine, took the podium after Ray and gave an overview of the purpose of the award before announcing each winner.
