I think I'll give it a shot, and I think I'm going to put some line stops on too.

The reels take up a lot of space in the pocket with the handle, knob, etc. and the ones I'm finding online are between six and ten times more expensive than the spools.

This is exactly what I do. It works well but confused the crap out of my buddy when I handed a spool to him once... actually twice... I think he is either a slow learner or he doesn't like it.

That's exactly what I do. Except I clip to the cheater loop where that video showed clipping just behind the cheater loop. Practically the same thing, though.

There's a bunch of extra knots in the Santiago video. I do it with just two knots: The "cheater loop" knot and the "main" knot.

What I see in the video is just one extra knot over the usual....on the side of the big loop, so you have a grab point to get the line out of the spool's side-hole.

How do you find fishing the line through the hole to stow the spool after use when you have thick gloves on? It seems like the knot would help since the way the guy showed on the video doesn't work underwater (i.e., he just slid it through effortlessly on a stiff line, whereas underwater things are moving around and the line doesn't hold it's shape like that).

I quit storing them in a pocket. I now keep 3 or 4 mini spools on the top of my shoulder. Out of the way of everything, but easy to grab when I need them. I went back to clipping through the hole since they're no longer being smashed or sat on. No accidental opening gates, no broken spools. I still keep my safety spools on my butt, and with a small loop passed through a hole and clipped only to the line. Never had one come off that way.

What's the purpose of all the extra complication?

In the middle of the boline (which is ample size for passing the spool through) I've been placing a bungie loop a little smaller than the spool to secure the line whether or not the clip comes off. That way I can orient the clip properly, stow it on a d ring while I am deploying the line, etc. The bungie makes the loop easy to lift off the line. No confusing knots to figure out in an emergency, especially if loaning a reel to a buddy.
