I started thinking of myself as a cave diver when I could do the dives I wanted to do confidently and in consistently good form. But there are levels - I'm a pretty good one stage, normoxic trimix, line following tourist cave diver. I don't frighten myself or my buddies or damage the cave. But I've never done any exploration, and at almost 300 cave dives, compared to many I'm a rookie. There are always greater levels of competence and skill toward which to aspire. (I almost wrote "to aspire to", but don't want to commit a spelin or grammer violation.)

It's difficult to judge if you live far away and don't get to dive caves often. 'Takes awhile for the muscle memory to get back. Around the time I start to feel like a cave diver, it's time to go home![]()

when you stop starring at the line and start enjoying the cave
I'm a little over 5000 dives in, which involves several thousand trimix and "proper" wreck dives, perhaps 1500+ cave dives and I don't consider myself a "real" cave diver yet, I still have an enormous amount to learn, and look forward to the journey...
