Most of the caves are sidemount. You might squeeze into them in backmount but it would be tight. A few of the caves have Hunsucker WKPP line arrows in them. I am sure he wouldn't have been diving in sidemount as everyone knows you are going to die.The largest cave in the area that is definitely backmount is Ebro Blue which is just South of Holmes Creek / Choctawatchee river junction. It is high flow and has a rope to pull yourself in by. There is several thousand feet of cave there. From my experience it is best to dive it during flood stages as the flow is decreased and the viz is better. When the river is low you can see the sand being blown around and the viz is a few feet at best. During a flood the flow is decreased enough that the viz gets to 30' or so on the way in. Now on the way out it is normally bad from all the percolation.
I wouldn't recommend Ebro unless you are comfortable with free flowing regs and flow probably like none you have ever encountered before. Not a place for newbie cave divers.
I thought using a rope to pull yourself into a cave was covered in apprentice.![]()
I was going into Ebro one time with 3 stages and a scooter. Somewhere along the way I got the rope tangled up in my gear. I was solo and could not get up over the rock where the rope was tied off to get out of the flow. I was hanging on to a rock one handed and trying to sort out where I was hung up. It took me over 30 minutes to get untangled and I sucked down a stage in the process. During the struggle I started laughing to myself thinking that this would be embarrasing to drown here with over 500 cuft of gas on me. Also some of the caves in that area get really silty and are zero viz on the way out. Tracy and I were in one and it got so bad I thought my primary failed as I couldn't even see the glow. Upon deploying my backup I realized it was not working either. I stuck it up to my mask and realized it was working after all. Most of those caves are advanced dives but they are some of my favorite.
LoL! Yes that was a most interesting dive, lol! Great real world practice.Wasn't it like 1000 ft of having to be on the line?
It was at least a 1000'. I have heard some horror stories from other people when they were in there also.
I dont mind sidemount. Im just not a fan of removing things tp get through
