This kind of thing always frustrates the hell out of me. Like Florida needs more urban sprawl....

Yup, just what the country needs - another MallWart.

I read not long ago that 96% of the US population lives within 15 miles of a WalMart. I'm delighted to be one of the 4% that doesn't.

Just remember that you should believe half of what you see and none of what you hear. I've been in the news (for both good and bad) nearly a dozen times. In every single time (good and bad) the writer embellished significantly to make his story interesting. I doubt this story is any different. For example: The Bald Eagle hasn't been endangered for nearly a decade.

    Yessir!

Vermont was the last state to have a Walmart, and still only has a few. But lately there have been Dollar General stores popping up all over the place. I know that people have an inexhaustible appetite for cheap crap, but it's hard to believe that there is enough business to keep them all going.

And I have to agree with Superlyte27 about the lack of accuracy of the press. Over the years I've been involved in many events that were reported in the news, and almost every time the news account was inaccurate.

Interestingly, dollar stores have often been seen as an indicator of overall economic health, as they tend to do better in recessionary times when consumers are squeezed and begin to ‘downscale’ their purchases....

I was happy to introduce my two children, about five years or so ago, to standing up and fighting for something you believe in when we attended a town meeting in Micanopy to help defeat a Dollar General coming into our small, historic town. (We started calling the store "Penny Private.")
My son, a middle school student then, even stood up and spoke out against it and there's still not one in Micanopy.
As for journalist and truth, as a j-school undergrad and former photojournalist, just know that there are some out there that believe in doing their job right and going the extra mile to do so. Unfortunately, they seem to be in the minority.
