Just figured I'd throw my own chart into this mix. You can look up the cubic feet to be used for thirds for any tank size (doubled) and any practical pressure. Compare this between your buddies and you're good to go. I carry this in my wetnotes.

SO... I don't have the sheet I used to create this little java script.... but it will at least let you validate that you are doing it right. There is NO validation, so make sure you are entering the numbers correctly.... example AL 80 is actually 77 CUFT not 80....

Why yes that was me inshorts and a t-shirt
oops, a drysuit @ the 700' marker
In my Cave 1 class, when asked to solve this problem, I answered: easy, I just go home and dive when my buddy shows up with the right gear. And I was serious, I never answered those questions.
If you show up at the dive site and everyone is using different tanks, the dive aint going to get any better in the cave!
What? If you told me that I'd find a better buddy. That sounds like laziness. Theres times I've dove 85s while my buddy was in 95s. Theres also been times I've been in 80s and my buddy in 95s because I was trimming out gear. If I or my buddy couldnt do the calculations (or cheat using the spreadsheet he created) we wouldnt have dove.
If your instructor didnt require you to anawer the question then where else did he skimp?
I'm hoping you're joking but I dont think you were.
