I have been exclusively using Saft batteries in 2 Predators (mine) and 2 Petrels (wife) and have never had an issue. So I think it is safe to say Saft brand batteries are ok to use.

I only use the saft batteries and bring backups on trips. It's cool that the petrel can use cheaper AA's but when I used them they died so quickly compared to the saft's that I don't see the cost savings.
Could you use a 3.7V ultrafire lithium rechargeable battery?

I have always used the saft batteries for all my shearwater products and had long life except for when I took my CCR cave course which apparently 24hrs of diving in a week can drain the battery pretty good.

Also had battery issues with my Petrel sent it to Shearwater they fixed it with Gold contacts new battery had it back in 2 days Great service
This is really interesting to anyone who designs dive gear. I imagine rather little research has been done on this topic - thanks to Shearwater Research for helping others design better products, while designing a great product themselves.
