    Default Spool Technique

Attached a screen grab from a video I shot this weekend.

In this case, the spool was run from the mainline in Ginnie, over to the roller coaster jump. It was nicely wound around the rocks on the floor to help out the scooter drivers (thanks!) but the line was left so loose that the entire spool was laying on the floor.

I've seen this enough that I wonder what technique is taught in class. The technique I've been taught wraps the double ender and spool around the line such that it's taught and up against the line you're jumping to. No slack - as tight as you can get with a reel.

Ideally you should push it in the clay so it doesn't float loose

Jef: Did you see that line at Rollercoaster?
Jeff: Some pretty unique line work I'd say.

BTW, Save the vids, I grabbed the wrong ones...

Yes, this was the jump from mainline to roller coaster. Yellow line, black spool.

You mean there is another endeavor that embraces the "Mashee"?

Actually I think that's my reel. If it had MA on it. I set along the floor and tight (I thought) on my way to the Hillier Tunnel. When I came back it was loose, so either I missed a wrap on the double ender or it got knocked loose, either way my bad.

Hey MichaelAngelo! I'm not sure whose spool this is. It was at the entrance to Roller Coaster off the mainline right at 700 feet or so. I saw it in the cave on both Saturday and Sunday mid-day. I wasn't really all that interested in blame storming so I didn't collect personal information on the spool or anything, and it's tough to make out personal identifying markers in the video anyway - and quite frankly, I don't care so much WHO put the spool in - it's not really important to me and I don't want folks to really feel singled out. So if it's OK with everyone, I'd like to move on from the "fault" portion of the discussion...

What I'm really interested in is "what do we teach" about how to use a spool? What are the pass/fail parameters?

In an effort to drive some discussion, I made a video of the way I was taught how to run a spool and posted it on youtube so we can discuss.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gIntKxOwH4

Using this method, I don't see any practical way for the spool to come loose, and I can get it just as tight as a reel.

Am I doing this right? Is this how people are taught? Or is there a different/better way?

Hi Jeff. Great video. I like the trick of wrapping the line in the double ender as you approach the target line and snap the bolt into the reel.I do not wrap it as I approach, I wrap it when tidying back on the outbound way.

Like you, I snap the bolt into the reel, just not pre wrapping the line.

It wasn't mine then because I pulled my reel at exit Saturday midday. As a rule I don't leave reels in cave. However I guess my point is everyone makes a mistake even if you've run the jump a hundred times. If I make a mistake and sometimes I do, I'll cop to it. It looked too loose anyway, when I ran mine there were 2 or 3 reels there.

I like the idea of wrapping the line on the snapbolt as you approach the line. I didn't think of how easily the line would continue running through it. I always wrap right as I get to the line.

    Nice video
