    Not really... Escalating a situation where gang activity may be involved is not a smart thing to do as a tourist in Mexico.

    Blame it on my upbringing I guess (or time in the service) but if someone is going to attempt to rob me, and/or harm my family or friends, at the very least I want the option of protecting and defending myself regardless of any gang activity or where I am.

    If you bring camera equipment for the day, I would leave it clipped off inside the cave, even on non photo dives. Sites like Mayan Blue which are known for theft, pay someone $15 to watch your stuff while you dive, or rotate dive groups so someone's watching.

    Most of the theft I've heard about in the area has been opportunistic theft and not violent.
    Cost of living is also a lot less down there. Our last trip we spent $175 at the grocery store and left with 2 full baskets of food and drinks. It was for 6 of us and after a week we left stuff behind. I'm not saying $1k/month is a lot but it's not comparable to what we make here. That's a decent amount of money considering the price of things for the locals.

    A few years ago the guy that was paid to watch the cars at Mayan Blue got beat up and robbed. Best practice is to leave nothing valuable in the vehicles and maybe evven leave the windows rolled down. That's what a guide we've used in the past did.

    What I can't believe this. I thought banning the possession of firearms would keep them out of the criminals hands. I see it has worked so well everywhere it has been tried. I know I would really feel safe in Chicago since they don't allow firearms. Just look at the violent crime statistics in Australia since they banned firearms. Oh I know what is wrong the government just didn't spend enough money on enforcement.

    Seriously? Unless I'm underwater I'm seldom more than a few feet from a firearm.

    Well I tried to post on this thread but apparently I posted on the Parker Turner video thread instead. Smartphones are great but the small screen can cause problems or it might be my lack of computer skills. {Edit: I removed it from the other thread - Russell}

    Anyway if your neighbor is anti gun just put up this sign in your yard.

    Based on reports via "Local" paper - they caught 3 of the 4 - police are still looking for the 4th and the stolen items
