As someone who has moderated a number of forums and is currently a moderator on another scuba related forum, I am wondering about your definition of a thread that has run its course. The thread was running pretty hot, actually, when it was closed with the explanation that it had run off of its original topic. The post explaining that the thread had run its course and was being closed was posted 42 minutes after the last of a flurry of posts.
In comparison, in the other diving forum in which I moderate, we do not close threads that have run their courses. We only close them when there is a serious reason to get people to stop posting in them--as in, say, a possible lawsuit. We figure that when they have run their courses, people will stop posting in them. If we were to close a thread that we feel has run its course, I suspect we would wait more than 42 minutes.
