I noticed that the logo was missing the last time I was there. IIRC there used to be a plaque or two on the rail as you head down the path to the basin, they are also gone now and you can see the difference in color of the wood rail where they once were. Interesting those that feel compelled to protect Wakulla springs from things like camping and diving,don't live in Wakulla county,but Leon county-you know the same county that is polluting Wakulla. I know that Wakulla springs provides X amount of income to Wakulla county,but inspite of that,it hasn't shown a significant increase in growth. Why not allow diving,and bring a little more money to an impoverished area. You know some Wakulla county officials became irate that the protectors of the park from Leon county would have the audacity from them benefiting from growth. I know some of them contacted the media,but never saw it in print.

This popped up in my news alert last night. This is how the news media handles things like this. They post a heart warming picture of the father and son then give few details other than saying they died during their cave dive then they say the grandfather wants the site closed to "protect" people. Next thing you know a bunch of people who know nothing about it and have absolutely no interest other than what the media stirs up will be calling for closure. Then some elected official trying to make a name for himself and look like he's actually productive will get involved and "do something about it." Sorry for the rant. This article seems very strange to me, and I am speaking as a former journalism teacher. It has almost no facts whatsoever. Here is the entire lead: "Florida Fish and Wildlife is looking at what they can do to make Eagle Nest Sink a safer place to dive." They don't have a single attribution for that lead. Who is saying what? Where? When? It would be a failing lead in an introduction lesson in a high school journalism class. Even if they didn't put that information in the lead, it should at least make it somewhere in the body of the story. When you read a news story, it is an essential concept in journalism that the reader know how the reporter got the information. Look for the phrase "according to..." or something like that in the next news article you read.
More importantly, it is neither timely nor up-to-date. Spivey's father called for closing the cave to diving almost immediately after the incident. That was nearly a month ago. If the article had been written verbatim then, it would have been timely, but coming out now is very old news. It is not up-to-date because Spivey's father reversed his position on closing it, and Florida Fish and Wildlife announced at that time that it was not considering any new restrictions. They either left those details out or didn't know them. The only way this story would be remotely appropriate coming out now would be if someone from Florida Fish and Wildlife made an new announcement about a change in position, in which case that should have been mentioned.
It reminds me of a sports story I read once in Denver's largest newspaper previewing the upcoming state basketball playoffs. It had a detailed description of each of the top-seeded teams. In the case of one team, it said that the team relied heavily on the scoring ability of a specific player on that team. The problem is that player did not exist. After each high school game, the home team coaches are required to call in the box scores so that they will appear in the paper the next day. One game a player who was normally a defensive specialist had a career game and led the team in scoring. When I (the coach) called in the score, I had a very bad connection. I repeated the player's name several times, but the person taking the score still got it wrong, and a player who doesn't exist was identified as the leading scorer. So the high school sports expert who wrote the detailed analysis of our team based his in-depth analysis on reading the box score of one game. I suspect the same shoddy and lazy reporting may be going on here. In that case, the might reflect reality as much as that sports report did.
It could be that there is not a single person in the commission who is even giving this matter a thought.
It's perhaps journalistically funky due to it being a TV station trying to do a newspaper story for the internet.
I thought it was well balanced, and I disagree about the grandfather. In the other articles, he came off as wanting it closed to prevent "what happened", as if it was someone else's fault. In this article, he seems to accept that it was their own stupidity and hubris, and registering rather than closing might be a solution.
