Great book. Should be required reading for anyone dealing with o2 in diving.

I clean my cylinders from O2 from the big bank of cylinders at work. After a couple of cycles of being banged up to 3000 psi and emptied then they're clean enough...

I'm curious what response you get once you talk to the shop.... post once you get your tanks back. my two cents... they are hosing you... clean them yourself or find a different shop.

I had a gooberhead bring in a couple of 80s wanting PP nitrox fills. He owned about ten cylinders and I had done visuals for him for probably eight years. But these two cylinders had brand-new Nitrox wraps. Luckily, I didn't buy into it.

Since I had to drain them, I went ahead and pulled the valve on one. As I expected, it was thoroughly lubed with Dow-Corning 111 silicone grease.

One of the local shops here in Albany took my brand new HP130's from DGE, removed the valves and did a VIP, charging me of course when all I asked for was a EANX fill, of course they slobbered the silicone all over everything upon re-installation of the valves.
Anybody ever bought cylinders from DGE knows they have a VIP sticker on them. I think since i wanted Nitrox, in their mind meant a nitrox sticker and I suppose their policy is a VIP to put on a nitrox sticker?
These people are fools, everybody stay away from them. Hint, it ain't The Dive Shop

If someone put silicone grease on the valves of my nitrox-clean cylinders I would inform them they needed to replace them with brand-new cylinders, or face a lawsuit. You can't get that crap out.

I had the cylinders sent off to be O2 cleaned, the valves were dis-assembled, cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner and O-rings replaced.
I'm certain they came from DGE as O2 clean, and were supposedly returned to that condition. I didn't to recover any money, just didn't want the hassle, just chalked it up to lessons learned.
Why can't silicone be cleaned off?

it can be cleaned off, but it is a pain and you will end up tumbling the cylinder to get the crap out that came off the threads, if you want to be sure it's clean.
