Some of us use Christolube or Krytox on our flashlight and camera o-rings. I, personally, don't want that nasty silicone crap on my fingers.

I haven't asked them, but I doubt the hydro facility that hydro'd my tanks last did a VIP after the hydro. The reason I doubt it is because my tank had so much rust/sludge in it that they couldn't see the metal underneath to conduct a VIP. This probably isn't representative of hydro shops in general, just saying that I don't assume they were VIP'd after hydro.
I have now learned that Luxfer recommends the visual eddy test on all their tanks. I've forwarded the link to the local dive shops. Thanks for that update (2004, so I guess I'm a bit late)!
Our hydro facility does not do visual inspections or visual eddy testing. They send the newly hydro'd tanks back to us for the visual. I know they don't cause the guy who does the hydro said he wasn't going to do that, did not have the equipment to do the visuals, and does not own or want to own the visual eddy testing equipment. He says the visual is required at time of hydro, but he is not required to do it as long as it gets done. I have no idea if this is legit, but it's how we do it.

You're correct. A VIP is legally required as part of the hydro process. It doesn't have to be a vip and then stickering. My understanding based on conversations with a hydro guy is that the reason a VIP is not "included" is professional courtesy to the dive shop. The hydro guy vips the tank. If it's safe, it's hydored. The hyrdo guy gives the tank back to the shop and the shop does the vip for the sticker. The hydro guy doesn't care about the oxygen clean status. He only cares that the tank is suitable enough to be worth hydro'ing.
Ok. You may want to reread my post. Which one of the hydro facilities in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area that I have done business with does visual inspections (with or without stickers) ??
Additionally, I have the most recent edition of CFR Title 49 Parts 100 - 177 in front of me as well as some of the publications from the CGA which have been referenced into law. Where exactly is it written that the hydro facility is required (or they are in violation) to perform visual inspections? Exact page number or section would be great. Thanks in advance.
Check with Woody at ASPE in Sewell in South Jersey. He told me about the requirement to do an eddy test on all 6351 tanks before doing a hydro. I don't know how far the regs go with other tanks, but I know that Woody will gladly put a VIP sticker on if he has any. I have supplied him with stickers in the past. He's done my hydros for many, many years.

In the VIP training we are taught to remove all stickers and the boot. How else can you see if there's rust or not. You'd be surprised what's under those stickers and boots. Check the entire tank. Inside and outside.
