That didn't work out so well last time we tried it, remember? Although I'm still trying to figure out why. I think maybe if has to do with mass and inertia?
Stage bottles just to get there and back.
But the snorkel gives you free gas. And you could just attach the rope to the D-ring on you crouch strap. That way the boat can just cruse by and drop you off.
Plus it makes the ride easier.

Hey maybe for fun you could design a reverse hydrofoil that would allow a diver to connect a tow rope. If the speed of the tow vessel was just right you could decompress on the ride back.
