I think the petition is a great idea, I don't know how to set one up either. My letter back from the Mayor basicly said "thanks little girl, now go away and let the EXPERTS run things". It was the second most condensending email I have ever recieved! This from a women who has a day job as a secretary at Shands. I was very upset to say the least. Last year I emailed her and told her that I HAD an expert look at the cave. No one from the city of Alachua ever contacted him. What a crock. If we get a petition I want to send it to the CEO of Wal Mart. They have an entire web page on how great at conservation they are. He is on my list of people to write anyway. Not that this just set me off or anything! Cindy Butler

Another suggestion is a letter to the editor of the High Springs, Alachua papers and to the Gainesville Sun. If I'm off tomorrow I'll work on it. Cindy

I know one thing: If Wakulla springs had a Super Wal Mart with gas stations etc. going in over the top of it, less a block from the opening THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN!

This cave has been dye tested THIS YEAR to Hornesby Springs. I, as a human being to NOT understand either the lack of reaction by the owners of the cave or that anyone in cave diving is not behind trying to stop this 100%. OK, now I have to go to work because I am pissed. Cindy

The statement is the most important part; it must be clear and concise without containing too much jibberish. Keep in mind that those who sign it will be affirming that they agree with all that is stated, i.e. ask for too much and some may be reluctant to sign it (this is where knowledge can be a bad thing.) Yet it does need to contain enough specifics to be taken seriously by those in power, i.e. we cannot just say that we do not want Walmart to build there. To me, something calling for stern enforcement of conservation measures to protect the cave seems like it would have the most effect; I honestly feel that if it comes off as being anti-Walmart that there will be those who will not sign that might have otherwise and it will not be taken as seriously higher up (just my humble opinion here.) I think Karl has a knack for being able to word quite effective documents of this nature, so my suggestion would be for those with the knowledge of the system to talk to him and together draft something that will do the maximum good. Are you up to the challenge Karl?

I agree Wayne, I am far from being anti Wal Mart. I just want them to move down the road! I'll try to come up with something but siting existing laws will be tough as I don't know what they are. Any legal beagles out there with the right statutes or someone with the time to look them up? I am only sending a letter to Wal Mart to let them know about the situation. There experts failed to mention the spring cave under the land. Wal Mart may just back off. OK, I do eat too many mushrooms! A girl can always hope! Cindy

Cindy, don't get confused about what site is where. The report on the Alachua website is for the _distribution_ center...not the store near Mill Creek. Have you been in touch with Buford about his efforts?
