A new tropical storm that formed Wednesday morning off the Atlantic coast of central Florida is forecast to move through South and Middle Georgia later this week, soaking the Southeast with up to 10 inches of rain.

Tropical Storm Tammy was centered about 20 miles east of Cape Canaveral at 7:30 a.m., moving north-northeast at 16 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Maximum sustained winds were about 40 mph, and the Hurricane Center said some strengthening is possible.

The Hurricane Center posted tropical storm warnings from Cocoa Beach, Fla., northward to the South Santee River in South Carolina, including the entire Georgia coast.

The forecast track has the storm near Waycross by 2 a.m. Thursday, moving to the northwest into west-central Georgia by early Friday.

"Tammy is expected to produce 3 to 5 inches of rainfall over portions of northern Florida, southeastern Georgia, eastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina, with isolated maximum amounts of 8 to 10 inches," said Richard Knabb, a forecaster at the Hurricane Center.

The forecast for metro Atlanta calls for mostly cloudy skies toinght, with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight.

Thursday through Friday will be mostly cloudy, with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and highs in the 70s, the National Weather Service said.

That's not the worst of it.

What was Stan has kicked off a strong piece of energy that is now emerging into the Yucatan channel.

The upper level flow is going to force this to move somewhere between northward (towards me!) and towards the Keys. Regardless, don't be surprised if a second tropical system heads your direction - from the other side!

Oh, there's at least one more little spinny thing out near PR right now too.....

We may run out of letters and have to go to the Greeks yet....
