Don't tell me you can't afford it. You've got thousands upon thousands of dollars in dive gear. You either care about your families well-being after you're gone, or you don't.
    Good call Peter,

KenW: We all know its a responsibility but how many actually prepare for that responsibility? If people acted responsibly we wouldn't have angry, broke wives or husbands try and make us all pay for there stupidity and we wouldn't have unethical self serving cave divers support such claims for there own financial gain at the communities expense.

It sounds like Skip wants something like a "Cup and Flower Fund" that the military uses a lot. However, in the military, it provides a memento and flowers to the spouse when one leaves the unit.

This is pure memorial. . . . not sure it has the same tone. . . .

We have done them in the past on a case by case basis.

Would this fund pay out if someone died, diving in a cave outside of their certification? Maybe using equipment they are not certified to use in a cave like a DPV or a rebreather? Who would decide if the deceased was doing something stupid or if they died from a genuine accident?

I would prefer to donate to the legal fund, to make sure we have the assets to defend ourselves rather than settle unwarranted claims.

I'm a member if the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) and we have a death benefit fund.

The member designates who the funds go to and the amount is around $2000.00.

Each member contributes $5.00 when another member passes away for any reason.

Just to expand on the program Tony mentioned, as I am a participant; to receive benefit a member must have continually participated in contributing to the fund until the time of thier death to receive the benefit.

Tony, correct me if I am mistaken.
